The Forest Preserve District of DuPage County is seeking a Preserve Project Designer to join their team. This position utilizes technical knowledge, written and graphic communication skills, and design capabilities of an interdisciplinary design professional to assist in project design, management, administration and implementation of architectural, civil engineering, landscape architecture, and natural resource restoration capital improvement projects throughout the District in adherence to the District’s Mission and federal, state, and local regulations within the established budget and schedule as directed by the Capital Development and Planning Supervisor. Responsibilities:

  • Assist in preparing design details, specifications, construction documents, quantity takeoffs and cost estimates for capital improvement projects including recreational facility improvements, trails, support facility infrastructure, landscape and natural resource restoration improvements, historical site and building rehabilitation that improve visitor experiences while protecting natural resources.
  • Conduct site analysis, collect field data, and perform topographic survey and tree inventories at construction sites utilizing traditional and GPS and Total Station survey equipment.
  • Assist in developing design programs including project scoping, goals, objectives, strategies, tactics and narratives, schematic and conceptual design options, cost estimates from site analysis/field data surveys, coordinate required permits, and prepare preserve and facility design development recommendations for projects.
  • Provide professional advice, consultation, and technical assistance to District departments to analyze facility problems or needs, gather data necessary to describe and understand the problem or need, and assist staff in developing project action plans.
  • Administer contracts, and assist in the district’s design, bid, and construction administration processes including conducting meetings, reviewing plans, specifications, and submittals for compliance to standards and project requirements, preparing agendas, meeting minutes, performing site observations and inspections, preparing observation reports and overseeing completion of punch-list and warranty items.
  • Assist in preparing master plans for long-range preserve improvements, including inventory, analysis, public hearings, alternative studies, design recommendations, phasing, conceptual costs, and periodic updates.
  • Prepare graphic exhibits, 3D/BIM models and other visual imagery to convey project ideas and information.
  • Present, plan, and report information to District staff.
  • Assist in coordinating license and easement requests from public agencies and utility companies as appropriate.
