The Naperville Water Utility seeks an Automation & Communication Technician to program and support Supervisory Control and Data Acquisition hardware and software, including GE iFix and Allen Bradley PLCs. You will modify, install, test, troubleshoot & repair SCADA system assets to ensure 24/7 reliability and functionality of wastewater pump/lift stations, wastewater treatment and/or water supply sites, elevated tanks, ground reservoirs, and emergency ground water wells. You will perform inventory and asset management of SCADA hardware and data collection equipment. You will be responsible for supporting a full range of technical SCADA hardware and software, working independently, and exercising judgement and initiative. Reporting to the Water Distribution & Control Manager, this position will also assist the Collection & Pumping Supervisor, Water Supply Supervisor and Springbrook Operations Supervisor with needed SCADA issues and improvements. This position assists with SCADA and rehabilitation projects, and provides technical assistance as needed. Some responsibilities are the following:

  • Perform skilled programming, corrective and preventative maintenance on the Water Utilities SCADA system computers including servers, radio and cellular communication systems, HMI programming, VFD trouble shooting and control systems.
  • Troubleshoot and resolve SCADA programming problems and write programs for new or enhanced SCADA functions; assist in troubleshooting system wide issues by tracing failed function from source to destination.
  • Troubleshoot routine network and telecommunications hardware and devices including servers, routers and switches; resolve or refer to city IT staff.
  • Document programming source code, and test and upgrade work performed; develop technical documentation for user support; organizes and store related documentation on system servers.
  • Provide technical support in developing SCADA screens for the purpose of monitoring operational processes and field equipment; makes routine software changes; work with analysts and operators to test system performance.
  • Maintain licenses for software used in PLC programming; maintain technical library materials.  Stay current on industry changes and security advisories related to software and hardware.
  • Program, maintain, and upgrade process controls from PLC ladder logic to field equipment for water/wastewater treatment and critical power distribution systems.  Install, calibrate, and troubleshoot control system components and related instrumentation.
  • Upgrade, maintains and ensure consistent, reliable operation control systems (including PLCs, power monitors (PM), protective relays, HMIs, VFDs and RTUs).  Perform installation, maintenance, calibration, and troubleshooting of process instrumentation, including sensors and probes.
