The Village of Downers Grove is seeking qualified applicants for a Maintenance Worker II position in the Water Division of Public Works. This position serves as a foreman of a work crew, coordinating and delegating crew members’ duties and activities, and performing labor tasks. The ideal candidate will be able to oversee crew operations and the maintenance of a wide variety of tools and equipment used to repair and maintain Village roads, water mains, storm sewers, traffic control facilities, grounds, and equipment.
Starting wages for this position are $65,565, increasing to $93,665 following six years of service. This full-time, non-exempt position is in the International Union of Operating Engineers, Local 150, Public Employees Division. Major Duties and Functions:

  • Supervises the daily duties related to the maintenance of a variety of Village systems and infrastructure, including roadways, sidewalks, water, traffic signage and traffic control, forestry, and stormwater.
  • Provides effective instruction to the crew.
  • Performs water repairs for main breaks, hydrants, valves, and meters.
  • Participates in water shut-offs and turn-ons, and the overall distribution and general maintenance of the water system in the Village.
  • Performs snow removal while using assigned heavy equipment.
  • Responds to all public works service requests as well as other department service needs.
  • Carries out special response and repair duties associated with emergencies.
  • Participates in setup and cleanup for Special Events in the Village.
  • Upholds work zone safety procedures.
  • Demonstrates superior internal and external customer service skills through relationships with staff and communications and interactions with the public.
  • Maintains flexibility in work scheduling; allows for off-hour scheduling.
  • Attends all required safety training and applies training while performing work duties.
